Our Local Mother Goose

There's a lot of magick that happens behind the walls of Rowan Woodwork. Recently, we had the chance to finish a beautiful hand-carved secret miniature theater cabinet by world renowned Matty Gordon. Cabinet of Wonder is a project by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Children’s Theatre, in collaboration with creative powerhouse (and Kez regular) Natalie Merchant.

Cabinet of Wonder is an amazing video project will introduce young audiences to music, poetry, and the dramatic arts. It reimagines Mother Goose and her rhymes for a new generation of young children with modern interpretations of the classic child-centered canon. Children come to visit Miss Natalie and are transported by her stories, rhymes, and big blue cabinet (which houses the secret shadow puppet theatre behind its doors). This Cabinet of Wonder serves as a beautiful portal through which the children both view and become the inhabitants of Rhyming Town in The Land of Make-Believe.

This cabinet itself came to life through a magical portal of its own. Last year, when Matty was at Kez, he mentioned being stuck on how to make the cabinet backdrop rotate with new scenes. It was mere moments before the Rowan magick began its work. Quentin stepped in and worked with Matty to bring the vision to life.

Cabinet of Wonder is a large-scale public arts project made possible through the generous support of donors. Thanks for considering making a tax deductible donation, to make sure more children can share in the Cabinet of Wonder. And come experience the magick of Kez for yourself!
