Stone Ridge Speakeasy

At each step the Rowan team was on schedule, on budget, creative, professional and disciplined. [...] From my perspective as an owner working without an architect, one of the most appreciated aspects of engaging with Rowan was the balance of flexibility and open-mindedness on the one hand, with discipline and rigor on the other. [..] It was a pleasure to work with Rowan’s team of creative individuals to produce something beautiful.

Hidden down a long driveway removed from view by distance and sparse trees is a home that brings meaning to the town of Stone Ridge. A beautiful old stone home covered with ivy is the perfect setting for this project. A speakeasy wouldn't be far-fetched in the basement of an old home like this, and with a direct design line with the homeowner, this one feels like it has always been there.

The bookcases lining the uncommonly lit basement walls make sense to be out of walnut, the perfect material to age gracefully and blend into this old house. The fluted tambour lining the walls below cast shadows and highlights that continue through the corner of the room, curved to accentuate the stunning Schimmel grand piano. The foundation of music is evident with the dovetail drawers packed with CDs and vinyl and a carefully positioned listening area with speakers sprawling throughout to fill the entire room with sound. Juxtaposing yet complimenting the high-tech audio-visual components are the impressive collection of books on display, foremost an encyclopedia set that was a focal point in the casework design.

The bar is the show stopper of this area. Its brass top will patina with every leaning forearm or dewy coupe glass, and like the walnut, will age gracefully. Designed and fabricated by Chris Bernard at Metal Works Limited, this top got the literal white glove. To be the bartender is truly the best view: looking at the library, listening to the music, and conversing with your lucky "patrons."

The installation happened over a few rainy days. We spent time fitting cabinets, snaking the audiovisual and lighting cables around ductwork, through tight chases, and into their connection points. We lowered the easily smudged brass top into its perfect place, ready to serve. Working in this home was a true delight.
